Third party payer system
Discount on your ticket
Many cities and municipalities, employers or other agencies pay part or all of the transportation costs of their inhabitants, passengers on their territory or employees. For instance they may offer their residents a cheaper return ticket during events like market days or Sunday openings. You can find out whether this system is applicable in your city or village from the list of cities and municipalities that intervene as a third party payer (in Dutch).
Discount on your Lijn ticket: Municipality card/third party payer trip card
The Municipality card (10 euro) or third party payer trip card (3, 7, 8, 10 euro) is a Lijn card with which the passenger can travel more cheaply within a specific area (usually the boundaries of a municipality or city). The local government (City or municipality) pays part of the fare as a third party payer. Whether your city or municipality also intervenes as a third party payer system in the list of third party payer municipalities (in Dutch)
Type | Price per journey |
---|---|
Municipality card (10 euro) | € 1.00 |
Third party payer trip card 3 euro | € 0.30 |
Third party payer trip card 7 euro | € 0.70 |
Third party payer trip card 8 euro | € 0.80 |
Where can you purchase one?
- The Municipality or trip card can be bought in the municipality in which it is valid via the advance sales network of De Lijn (news agents, supermarkets, ...). The Municipality card for Genk is for instance only for sale at the advance sales points in Genk.
- The municipality can also decide to distribute the Municipality or trip card on top via their own channel, for instance in the town hall or library.
How to use it?
The same conditions of use apply for a Municipality card or third party payer trip card as for a Lijnkaart, only this card is not usable beyond the municipal boundaries. If you put the card in the validating machine outside the correct area, the message will be displayed for you to speak to the driver. However this does not mean that the card will no longer be usable hereafter within the municipal boundaries.
