Buses that stop in a bus bay find it harder to re-join the traffic after halting. As a result, they lose time. If they can stop on the carriageway, they will save time and traffic flow will be smoother.

Of course, this is possible only where traffic safety allows it. Every situation has to be examined on its own merit. The permitted speed limit is one of the factors determining whether this option can be chosen.

In areas with a 70 km/h speed limit, the best choice is usually bus bays and in areas with a 50km/h speed limit it is best to have footpath recess stops with the bus stopping on the carriageway.
