Our passengers like to wait for their bus or tram under comfortable conditions. As a local authority, you play an important role in ensuring such comforts at stops. Together with De Lijn, you can provide attractive shelters, benches, covered bike stands and litter bins.

Local authorities may choose between De Lijn's subsidised bus and tram stop facilities, shelters with advertisements, or individual designs. The first option is often also the best: you only pay part of the actual cost price while the Flemish region pays the rest. However, all shelters must comply with the standards laid down by law (De Lijn operations and charges Implementing Decree, Belgian Official Gazette of 20 July 2004).

What shelters can be installed?

1. Subsidised shelters

Our range of subsidised shelters was renewed in summer 2015.
  • The new, larger model E is 5.25 metres long to accommodate larger numbers of passengers.
  • Every model is also available in a vandal-proof version.
  • Old shelters can be removed against payment.
All shelters are automatically fitted with a solar panel, supplying energy for lighting. The installation is fully independent and there is no need to hook up the shelter to the power grid. In order to ensure optimum operation of the solar panel, it is best to enclose a location map and site plan with the order form.
In the brochure on subsidised bus and tram stop facilities, you will find an overview of all subsidised infrastructure and a detailed explanation of how to order and of the various steps to go through between placing the order and installing the facilities.

2. Shelters with advertising

A shelter with advertising will be installed free of charge by an advertising agency. In return, the agency may put up advertisements on the walls of the shelter. This type of shelter is mainly found in densely populated areas. The advertising agencies decide whether they are interested in erecting a shelter at a stop on the basis of specifications provided by the local authority. Here, De Lijn is not involved.
Like other models, shelters with advertising must meet the standards laid down by law (De Lijn operations and charges Implementing Decree, Belgian Official Gazette of 20 July 2004). It is advisable for local authorities to lay down a number of basic requirements in their contracts with advertising agencies.

3. Self-designed shelters

In addition to subsidised shelters and shelters with advertisements, you can also have a shelter designed and built yourself. Self-designed shelters are 75% subsidised, up to a maximum of € 11,205.00. You have to bear the costs of the design yourself.

De Lijn needs to approve the design before you can start construction. You may submit your application through the De Lijn official responsible for bus and tram stop facilities in your province. Subsidies are provided by the Flemish Government. For more information about conditions for subsidy and the application procedure, please contact the De Lijn official responsible for bus and tram stop facilities in your province.

What else can we offer?

1. Covered bike stands

In its publication on facilities for cyclists Vademecum Fietsvoorzieningen, the Flemish Region recommends that covered bicycle infrastructure be offered where possible. Accordingly, you will in our range of subsidised stop facilities also find covered bike stands with room for eight bicycles. Just like the shelters, the bike stands are fitted with a solar panel and there is therefore no need to hook up to the power grid.

You may choose De Lijn's standard bike stand or have a covered bike stand designed and built yourself. Self-designed bike stands are 75% subsidised, up to a maximum of € 10,893.64. De Lijn needs to approve the design before you can install it. You may submit your application through the De Lijn official responsible for bus and tram stop facilities in your province. Subsidies are provided by the Flemish Government. For more information about conditions for subsidy and the application procedure, please contact the De Lijn official responsible for bus and tram stop facilities in your province.

2. Benches and litter bins

At bus and tram stops with a lot of room next to the shelter, the local authority may install an additional stand-alone bench. All our shelters are equipped with a litter bin, but one may also be ordered separately.

3. Maintenance

For De Lijn passengers and local residents, it is important that trams and bus stop facilities are properly maintained. Clean shelters and benches and empty bins make the street more attractive and make waiting more pleasant. Also, properly maintained facilities attract less vandalism.

If your municipality cannot make provision for shelter maintenance by itself and cannot have recourse to an advertising agency, there are alternatives to maintain shelters.

What could be better at our stops?

In February 2016, De Lijn started a thorough inventory of its stops. Are they easily accessible? What could be better?

We went out with stop men François Van Aerschot and George Aelbrecht!
