AP COLLEGE IS FORWARD-LOOKING

Not only on the campuses but also on the way there.

The 1 277 personnel and 12 000 students are fully engaged in finding ways of keeping their commute from home to work and from home to college as sustainable and agreeable as possible.

Elke Esseldeurs, head of HR, acknowledges this positive trend: "We want to motivate and convince our staff and students of the importance of sustainability, also on the way to work or college. Antwerp is a big and busy city and thinking about remaining efficiently mobile is important."

THREE OUT OF FOUR MEMBERS OF STAFF TRAVEL TO WORK SUSTAINABLY

AP has six campuses, spread across the centre and the suburbs of Antwerp. Many do not live around the corner from the campuses.

"About half live in Greater Antwerp but there are also people from Brussels and Ghent who come to work by public transport. The train/tram/bus combination is actually quite doable to all campuses because they are located in areas easily accessible by public transport."

Of the total of 1 277 members of personnel, barely 317 drive to work.
They are a minority compared with the 156 who commute by tram and bus, 278 by train, 23 on foot and 492 (!) by bike.

"As many as 75% therefore travel to work sustainably, something we are of course very pleased about. Of course these figures have not come about by themselves.

We pay close attention to mobility. Look at our campus at Spoor Noord Park where we have invested heavily in providing extensive bicycle parking facilities, showers, lockers, and also commuter bikes."

A NUDGE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

More and more people care about the environment but many still need a nudge to leave their car at home. For example, AP College provides an allowance for the cost of alternative means of transport, from De Lijn season tickets to bike hire.

"Even travel by water bus is reimbursed. Currently we have a pilot project under way for Cambio car sharing, which lecturers and tutors can use to visit students at places where they are doing a traineeship.

We keep our people up to date about all our mobility measures and disseminate general information about sustainable mobility such as alternatives to the car. Of course, it is great to see that our efforts are rewarded."

EMPLOYER-PAID PUBLIC TRANSPORT

A partnership with De Lijn is an obvious choice for AP College.

"Since the establishment/restructuring of AP College, now more than six years ago, all members of our personnel who use De Lijn's services have been given a season ticket fully paid for by the College..

There are also colleagues who use a combined De Lijn-NMBS season ticket. Because of this pre-payment scheme, people do not need to keep tabs on their travel expenses, something that is highly appreciated."
Unlike travel by bus, tram, train and bicycle, car use is not reimbursed by the College.

"We regard this as something positive. We set great store by sustainability. It is good to see that thanks to our motivation our students and staff realise that smart travel is the right thing to do."

STUDENTS FASTER BY BIKE

Bicycles are a popular means of transport among students.

"At our Spoor Noord Park campus we have a car park, but in fact purely because we are legally obliged to have one. The 285 available spaces there are no match for the more than 1 000 (properly secured) bike parking spaces.

The bike parking areas are all full, day in, day out. You should see it for yourself: truly an impressive sight.
Cyclists can also make use of one of the Vélo stations right outside our campus. And then there is the iconic bike bridge which takes them directly onto our campus".

Moreover, all our campuses are easily accessible by public transport. "There are many bus and tram stops and Vélo stations right near our campuses. Once the tram network expansion has been completed, services will improve even more."
