PRESENTATION

Many Hans Anders shops are located in town centres. "Because of heavy traffic there, it is often difficult to manoeuvre and find a parking space, which is why a lot of our people take public transport to work", explains Romina Biliris of the Hans Anders company. "We find it only normal that their season tickets are pre-paid in full."

HR coordinator Romina Biliris and HR staff member Anaïs Lefebvre work in the HR department of the optician and audio chain and are responsible for the transport needs of the 350 employees. Romina: "Our people choose for themselves which means of transport to use to get to work. But bus and tram have a number of advantages, for both the employer and the employee."

AVOIDING STRESS

"Getting to busy shopping streets by car causes stress", explains Romina. "This is why almost everyone uses public transport, in particular people working in big towns. Or they park their car outside the centre and take the bus or tram there for the last leg of their daily commute."

FINANCIAL ADVANTAGE

How does the company itself benefit from the use of bus and tram? Romina: "On the one hand, public transport removes the need for expenditure on parking charges. On the other hand, a De Lijn season ticket is valid on the entire Flemish network, which means that an employee who temporarily needs to travel to another shop can do so using their existing season ticket. Car use requires additional administrative calculations to refund the cost of such a trip."

LESS RED TAPE

Hans Anders has for the past five years used the De Lijn pre-payment scheme. "Before that, our people used to buy their bus and tram season tickets themselves, valid for a month or a year, and we then reimbursed them at cost price ", Romina points out. "But as our workforce continued to grow, we had to make large numbers of such individual reimbursements. Thanks to the pre-payment scheme, all that red tape became unnecessary and we got more control over the season tickets. Also, it is nice for people that they no longer have to spend money on their season tickets themselves."

AWARENESS RAISING MATERIAL

Material is available to inform employees about the pre-paid tickets scheme. Anaïs: "De Lijn gave us posters to display near the coffee machine, PDFs to disseminate through our intranet, and flyers which we will attach to new contracts. De Lijn also offers free seven-day travel passes for people to try out buses and trams free of charge. We believe that is bound to encourage our staff to consider taking the bus and tram."

COLLABORATION WITH DE LIJN

En het contact met De Lijn? Anaïs: What about contact with De Lijn? Anaïs: "Twice a year our permanent contact comes to see us to go through the whole system and explain new options. We also get an immediate response when we phone De Lijn with a question about an invoice or season ticket. I can confirm that our collaboration and communication with De Lijn goes quite smoothly."
