PRESENTATION

A new traffic circulation plan came into effect in Ghent at the beginning of April 2017. For Schoenen Boonants, a family business with two shoe shops right in the car-free centre of Ghent, the new plan posed serious challenges. How could their people now get in and out of town quickly and easily? And how would they cope with their employees' rocketing parking costs? They saw the changes as an opportunity and adopted a different approach to commuting. Now they offer every member of staff a De Lijn season ticket through a pre-payment scheme. It has financial advantages for the firm. And their employees can get in and out of town smoothly. That's what we call win-win. It shows that De Lijn is also there for small businesses.

E-BIKE OR DE LIJN SEASON TICKET

Up until October 2016, all of Schoenen Boonants' employees came to work by car and the company paid their parking charges. But then the local authority changed its car parking policy and with the imminent circulation plan it became financially untenable to continue paying parking charges. It gave the managers Danny and Joris D’hont food for thought to consider alternatives.

In October, they gave all their employees the choice between an e-bike or a free season ticket for all De Lijn buses and trams. "Sure, that was a calculated risk", says Joris. "Our three employees opted for a De Lijn season ticket. They can drive to a park-and-ride where they park their car free of charge. From there they take a bus or tram to the centre. The stops are at walking distance from both our shops, in some cases even closer than the car parks where they used to go."

CHANGE IS NOT ALWAYS EASY

For one female employee the new approach works well. Since October last year, she has been leaving her car on a park-and-ride at the edge of town from where she takes a tram or bus. For two others things worked out less well. They gave up their job at Schoenen Boonants. Joris: "We were of course asking for a change in mentality, and not everyone is immediately ready for it." And yet, they do believe in their new approach. "We tried it out ourselves. The park-and-ride and tram combination takes as much time as driving your car into the centre, which is something not many people would expect."

The main thing is that their approach is adapted to Ghent's new traffic circulation plan. The plan divides the city into a number of sectors and you can no longer cross the city by car, but buses, trams and cyclists still can. This new situation calls for adjustments from local residents, employers, employees and visitors to the city. "As a business, you have to keep pace with developments in the city. Everyone has to do their bit. We now opt for bikes, trams and buses in town.

MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT

The two managers themselves always cycle to work. And they use a recently acquired bicycle trailer to carry things between the two shops. When we recruit new people now, we give them the choice between a De Lijn season ticket or an e-bike. In the meantime, a new female staff member has been taken on. Joris: "And there were no problems right from the start. She lives at the other end of Ghent and commutes by tram every day."

"I strongly believe in the synergy between tram, bike and car. Of course it is not always possible to take a bike or tram. When I have to get to Antwerp for a new collection, I do take the car. But nowadays it is no longer possible to simply park your car right in the centre of town. For travel in Ghent itself, bikes, trams and buses are perfect. People realise this more and more. Most of our customers now come on foot or by tram or bicycle. Leaving your car at the park-and-ride is free of charge. So, why not?

DE LIJN IS THE NEW STANDARD

They are pleased with their collaboration with De Lijn. "All it took was one phone call." The company pays for the season tickets and employees don't have to do anything special; they even receive their season tickets at home. "This is practical for us", Joris adds", but it is also saves money. We now pay much less than when we had to cover the costs of parking. Our employees can use their season ticket all year round for all their journeys. Especially an employee who lives in town sees this as a real benefit. As you can see, De Lijn has become our new standard."
