Make a sustainable contribution
Our mission at De Lijn is to help create a liveable Flanders with sustainable and attractive mobility for everyone. Both today and tomorrow. And we’re working on that with all our 8,000 colleagues every day. Read how we are carrying out this sustainable mission together!
Tackling challenges and achieving climate goals together
By 2035, all our buses must be emission-free. Achieving this climate target and meeting the requirements of the Flemish government are huge challenges that necessitate a major switchover. With the purchase of electric buses, for example, we’re busy creating a green fleet. But the infrastructure also needs to be fully adapted to this.
Other important projects are also in progress at the same time, such as the continuing roll-out of low-floor trams to make mobility more inclusive. All this has an enormous impact on De Lijn; in every region there are different technical challenges to be solved. All our departments are playing their part in this. Close cooperation has never been more important!
“When we draw up specifications, we’re faced with the challenge of stipulating what we want as accurately as possible. At the same time, though, we leave some latitude so that the manufacturers can also add innovative ideas.”
Teamwork makes the dream work: across departments
To bring all projects to a successful conclusion, teamwork is crucial. For every project and every assignment, we combine the input of different colleagues from different business units. From Operations, Technology & Supply Chain Management to Finance and IT.
Project management is extremely important for this. We have engineers who specialise in various fields, such as electrical engineering, construction engineering or traction. By communicating clearly, we help each other to achieve shared goals more quickly. Together we stand stronger!
Gaining – and sharing – new knowledge every day
Major challenges require a great deal of know-how. Which we have! Specialists in all kinds of fields and disciplines, with the capacity to gain new knowledge and the courage to question things. In addition, everyone is given the chance to follow interesting training courses. This ensures that we’re always up to date with new technologies.

Eco-driving
Our drivers carry our passengers to their destination in a sustainable way every day, increasingly in hybrid buses or e-buses. But whether they’re at the wheel of an e-bus, a hybrid or a conventional model, they all practise eco-driving. They receive special training for this from colleagues at the driving school.
Discover the tipsBecause of this wide-ranging vision and openness to opportunities, there are surprisingly many career opportunities within De Lijn. Within individual departments, and across departments too. And that’s a great strength. This valuable cross-fertilisation improves our chances of innovating faster and better!
