Here’s how De Lijn is going greener every day
At De Lijn we’ve been working every day for years to make our fleet and buildings greener. We’re doing all we can to make your mobility more and more sustainable.
“By 2035: 172,000 less tons of CO₂ than in 2021”
thanks to new electric and hybrid buses.
It starts with better vehicles
Cars running on fossil fuel remain one of the largest sources of CO₂ emissions. One bus means dozens of cars absent from the road. If the bus or tram is also electric, then it really is the most sustainable alternative.

40% less diesel thanks to electric buses
That’s an impressive 67 million litres of diesel less per year. What’s more, the buses are quieter, more modern and more comfortable.
All about e-buses“3,430 e-buses driving 200 million emission-free kilometres every year”
That’s our plan for 2035.

Hello hybrid! The bus for a smooth transition phase
Unfortunately, fully electric buses can’t handle long routes yet. But hybrid is helping! As a result, part of the route is already greener and in the city the entire journey is emission-free.
I want to know more“Working from home definitely reduces CO₂ emissions.”
But if you do have to go to work, choose a green means of transport.

Tram journeys through the city are getting greener all the time
Trams are already electric of course. Can they be made even more sustainable? Absolutely – by opting for electronic control, better insulation and less weight, which we are also doing.
All about our tramsOur buildings have a part to play too!
Our vehicle emissions are important, but what impact do our buildings have? From purchased goods and services, to waste and staff mobility, here too we are aiming for climate neutrality.

8 sustainable alterations to depots
The e-buses require us to convert our depots so we can charge them overnight. This takes years, because there is more to it than just installing a few charging stations, so we’re making a lot of extra choices for instant energy-efficiency!
View them all“All the electricity we consume is green:”
98 to 100% hydropower, supplemented by solar and wind energy.
How are we taking further action?
The Belgian Alliance for Climate Action
Membership of De Lijn is a logical next step in all the initiatives we are already taking today to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
Science Based Targets
The science behind our climate goals.
As far as possible, we communicate digitally
Maximising digital communication is something we’re fully committed to at De Lijn. After all, why waste paper when there’s an alternative? Whatever you want to know, you can find it at delijn.be and in our app! And when it really is necessary to use paper, we print on sustainable paper and ensure that it is sent sustainably.

Yellow on the outside, green on the inside
All of our Lijnwinkel stores will also be given a sustainable makeover.
Step inside*In 2021, the emissions arising purely from our vehicle fleet (managed by ourselves + our partner operators) amounted to 172 kt of CO₂ (i.e. 172,000 tons, of which approximately 95,000 tons was generated by the fleet under our management).
**The Mobility and Public Works Committee now refers to emission-free kilometres on an annual basis rather than on a P2 basis. Our plan for 2035: 200 million emission-free kilometres on an annual basis. We will achieve this result through close cooperation with our partners.
