SEATRS. Sustainable sneakers using seat fabric.
De Lijn and Komrads, the Belgian sustainable sneaker brand, are releasing a shoe together. De Lijn? A shoe? That’s crazy! Well, no, actually. Because this shoe is made entirely from recycled materials, including leftover textiles from bus and tram seats. That’s why they’re so comfortable. But above all: that’s why they’re so good for the climate.
“We’ve been working for some time now on reducing CO2 by encouraging people to leave their cars at home more often, and we’ve also been actively pursuing the electrification of our fleet. ”
Recycling old buses and trams is another aspect of this. Our vehicles don’t simply go to the scrap heap: various parts are recovered. They may be used in other vehicles, for example, or given a completely new purpose. For example, a tram in Ghent has been given a new life as an information kiosk. Pretty smart, right?

De Lijn X Komrads
To shine the spotlight on these efforts again, we’re working with Komrads. For those not yet familiar with it, Komrads is a Belgian shoe brand known for its sustainable sneakers. The sneakers are ethically produced, in a way that’s respectful of people, nature and the planet. Komrads only uses reused and recycled materials. In other words, it makes sneakers from waste.

The unique sneakers will have the name SEATRS – a reference, of course, to the iconic seat fabric from which they’re made.
These SEATRS use leftover textiles from old bus and tram seats, supplemented with recycled materials.
The sole, for example, consists of 90% recycled organic rubber and 10% old sneakers.
For the base, Komrads uses plastic removed from the sea and rivers. In this video you can see how the SEATRS are made.

“De Lijn and Komrads have the same mission: zero emissions”
As you can see, De Lijn and shoes do belong together after all. Our new project is also a way of promoting combined mobility. The fact is, you don’t have to take the bus every time you go somewhere. Using a bicycle, a scooter or just your own two feet is also a perfect alternative for getting around sustainably.
The limited edition of the sneakers consisted of 500 pieces and was launched by various influencers.
