Contactless payment on buses and trams

You can pay contactlessly at the white terminal on all De Lijn buses and trams.* It’s easy and quick, and means you always have a valid ticket with you.

A single trip costs 3 euro. Travelling as a group? Payment can be made for up to five people with the same means of payment.**

Your ticket will then be held on your means of payment. If there’s a ticket inspection, your bank card (or contactless means of payment) will be scanned with an inspection device.

How do I pay contactlessly?

How do I do this?

Step 1

Payment

Hold your contactless bank card or other medium (smartphone, smart watch, etc.) less than 4 centimetres away from the contactless payment symbol on the white terminal.

Step 2

Check

A green tick will appear on the screen, confirming that your payment has been accepted and your ticket is now on your means of payment.

Step 3

Repeat for multiple travellers

If you’re travelling as a group, hold the same means of payment in front of the same terminal again within two minutes. You can pay for up to five people this way. You will see the number of travellers on the screen. If you try to pay for more than five people, you’ll see a red screen and ‘Number of allowed travellers is reached’.

Step 4

Transfers

You can transfer to another bus or tram for free within 60 minutes. If you’re still on a bus or tram after the hour is up, you can complete your ride. Hold the same means of payment in front of the white terminal on the vehicle you transfer to, and repeat this process for each traveller in your group. Don’t worry: we won’t charge you for a new journey.

* Except for the Student Express Lines 178 and 179

** Children under the age of six travel for free, but must always be accompanied by a paying passenger who is at least 12 years old. View terms and conditions.

Which means can I use to pay?

How is my payment processed?

There are no additional costs associated with contactless payment, but 3 euro is reserved for each ride you take. The amount you have to pay depends on the number of journeys you made that day. We calculate this at night and the amount is automatically settled with your bank. If you transfer to another vehicle within 60 minutes, you won’t be charged for this. We always add a payment reference to your bank statement. You can check this on the online portal.

  • Prepaid card? If so, the charge will be deducted from your credit after one or more days. The exact timing differs from bank to bank.
