Emission-free public transport: strategy for 2035
Find out how De Lijn aims to achieve completely emission-free public transport in Flanders by 2035 with electric and e-hybrid buses.
To contribute to a better environment and climate and to meet your needs, De Lijn has developed a three-pillar strategy:
Phased purchase of
electric buses
, their
charging infrastructure
and
IT
, and their integration into all aspects of our organisation (depots, drivers, maintenance, technology, driving school, etc.). In this way, we will offer completely emission-free public transport throughout Flanders by 2035.
Accelerated phase-out of the most polluting diesel buses through the deployment of (e-)hybrid buses operated in-house. This is an interim solution to reduce harmful emissions more quickly in areas where most people live and where depots cannot yet be converted. In this way, we aim to provide optimal zero-emission public transport in urban areas by 2025.
Involving our operators, who account for roughly half of De Lijn’s total kilometres and journeys, in the electrification process. On the one hand, by including green transition criteria in the new contracts starting in 2025. On the other hand, by offering incentives to encourage them within existing contracts. This way, they too become part of the greening effort.
