Renovation of escalators in Antwerp metro

We are investing in better accessibility of our metro stations. De Lijn makes accessibility an absolute priority.

In various Antwerp metro stations, outdated or malfunctioning escalators too often cause inconvenience, especially for travelers with limited mobility or those traveling with strollers or luggage.

With a large-scale renovation program, we are replacing the outdated escalators in several stations with modern, energy-efficient, and reliable installations.

These investments not only improve accessibility for travelers with limited mobility, strollers, or luggage but also make it more comfortable and safer for all travelers.

The new escalators are equipped with automatic person detection, digital monitoring sensors, and a UV-C disinfection module. This module automatically disinfects the handrails of the escalators.

Overview of the works:

  • Sport, Schijnpoort, Handel, and Elisabeth – 11 new escalators;

  • Meir – 15 new escalators;

  • Diamant – 12 new escalators: the works have begun and will run until the end of 2026.

  • Plantin – 8 new escalators: the site will start at the beginning of 2026 and be completed by the end of 2026.

Along with these renovations, we are preparing our stations for the future—step by step, escalator by escalator, with one goal in mind: to help every traveler on their way comfortably and accessibly.
