Guidelines and funding for accessible stops

All your residents deserve to have the possibility of hassle-free, sustainable travel by bus or tram. And that includes people with a motor or visual impairment. Subsidies for accessible stops and infrastructure can definitely help with this.

Under the Flemish Government Order (FGO) on stops and stop infrastructure of 13 May 2022, it is possible to apply for subsidies for projects for the construction or redevelopment of an accessible stop.

You can contact De Lijn for the current guidelines, approval of the draft plan, and inspection after completion of the stop you need when applying for a subsidy.

Guidelines for accessible stops

Subsidy for the construction of accessible stops

The subsidy for the accessible construction of a bus stop amounts to

  • a maximum of 6,000 euros per stop and per travel direction.

This is for when a new stop is built or an existing one is redeveloped – making it accessible for travellers with a motor and/or visual impairment.

  • a maximum of 650 euros per stop and per travel direction.

This is for when facilities for people with a visual impairment are created.

Approval of draft plan

For stops in the core or supplementary network, cf. Art. 15 of the FGO, prior approval is required from De Lijn based on current guidelines.

You can contact the Traffic Flow Expert in your transport region for this:

  • You send the design of the stop to the Traffic Flow Expert.

  • He or she will assess this. If any modifications are needed, the plans can then be adjusted in time. You will receive a checklist from us.

  • Once the design meets the guidelines, you will receive a certificate that must be added to the subsidy application.

Check after the stop has been made

After that, the work can be carried out. Once it is complete, notify De Lijn at halte.accommodatie@delijn.be:

  • The De Lijn bus stop team will visit the site and check the stop’s accessibility status.

  • You will then receive a certificate confirming the stop’s accessibility status, which you must add to the subsidy application.
