Emissions from our vehicles

In recent years we have introduced various measures to reduce the emissions of our vehicles.

By using our buses and trams, a lot of car journeys in Flanders are avoided. At the same time, we also try to reduce the emissions of our own vehicles as much as possible. From 2019 we will only buy buses with an alternative power source, provided that the technology is up to date.

End of the classic diesel bus

From 2019 we will only order buses with green drive: hybrid buses, buses powered by hydrogen and electricity. This means the end of the classic diesel bus. For example, we want to accelerate the greening of our fleet and ensure that by 2025 only green buses will be running in urban environments.

Order 340 buses: 2017-2019

In order to replace as soon as possible the oldest polluting diesel buses with cleaner ones, preparations will start in September for an order for approximately 220 buses during the period 2017-2018. The hybrid buses of this order will run in urban environments, the modern diesel buses will replace the oldest ones on regional lines. This is because hybrid buses are not yet profitable on regional lines.

The first buses will appear on the streets in the course of 2018. An order will follow in 2019 for 120 hybrid and / or electric buses, to be delivered in 2020 and 2021.

In addition, a project with fully electric buses will be set up in a number of cities in 2017. The Climate Fund of the Flemish government provides additional resources for accelerated greening.

Also electric

The future hybrid buses must also be able to drive fully electrically in city centers. In this way, the regional lines can drive without emissions when in the city center.

Outside city centers, they drive hybrid, meaning a mix of batteries and a diesel engine. By recovering braking energy, hybrid buses make up to a quarter less noise and are more economical. As a result, they also emit less harmful substances.
