Accessibility Master Plan
In order to make our public transport services accessible to as many people as possible, we have invested in accessible vehicles. The Accessibility Master Plan deals with the stops.
All of our own buses are accessible and 85% of the trams will be accessible by 2025. The situation with regard to accessible stops is less positive, which is why we have drawn up the Accessibility Master Plan. The Flemish government wants half of all stops to be accessible by 2030.
Local authorities are an important partner for constructing/reconstructing accessible stops
No less than 62% of the current stops are located on municipal roads. With the Accessibility Master Plan, we therefore launched a charter in conjunction with the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG). By signing the charter, a municipality or city can commit to proactively achieving the objectives of the Accessibility Master Plan. Flanders supports the local authorities with a subsidy of 5,000 euros per stop that will be made accessible.
Every year, 30 local authorities can request a coaching programme for the ‘Master Plan for Accessible Stops’. Inter, the Agency for Accessible Flanders, helps them draw up an action plan. The local authorities then gain knowledge and inspiration through a learning network.
You can find out more about the Accessibility Master Plan on the website of the Department of Mobility and Public Works. The plan is part of the new Flemish mobility vision of basic accessibility.
