Accessible vehicles

Most vehicles are accessible, Discover all our accessibility measures.

Some figures:

  • Since 2004, we have only purchased accessible vehicles.

  • All buses on our fixed lines are accessible.

  • New trams replace the inaccessible older Antwerp PCC trams. By 2025, 85% of trams will be accessible.

  • De Lijn Flex has many accessible flex buses. Depending on the mobility needs, an accessible flex vehicle is used for a flexible move.

Facilities on an accessible vehicle

Ramp

The ramp helps wheelchair users to bridge the difference in level between the lowered floor of the vehicle and the elevated platform. If necessary, the ramp is extended or unfolded outwards and the bus kneels to make the slope less steep. The stop must be raised for it to be possible to use the ramp.

Wheelchair space

Accessible buses and trams have a clearly recognisable wheelchair space. One wheelchair can go in this space comfortably and safely. The stop request button and alarm button are within reach.

Reserved places

On the bus and tram there are reserved seats close to the door for people with reduced mobility. They are identified with a pictogram. The passenger code requires passengers to give up these seats for people with reduced mobility, older people or pregnant women.

Special stop request buttons

To increase the safety of less mobile passengers, recent buses and trams have a special stop request button. This button ensures that the doors do not close automatically.

Spoken and written stop announcements

The Coastal Tram and the new trams in Ghent and Antwerp use spoken and written stop announcements. The next stop is shown on an illuminated screen and is announced.

Markings

The steps, hand grips, poles and edges of the vehicles are marked with bright colours.
