Euregio Meuse-Rhine Connect project

The EMR Connect project focuses on the Meuse-Rhine region and improves mobility across our national borders.

What does the EMR Connect project do?

  • The project aims to improve cross-border public transport in the Meuse-Rhine region and make it attractive. The focus is on ticketing, fares, infrastructure and traffic supply.

  • The project is within the programme 'Interreg V-A Euregion Meuse-Rhine' and builds on previously implemented Interreg initiatives such as M3 (Interreg IV EMR).

De Lijn's stake in the project

Today, De Lijn has five lines running from (Belgian) Limburg to Maastricht. A significant proportion of passengers on these lines are Dutch. The agreement is that all travellers on these bus lines have a De Lijn ticket. This agreement will also apply when the HOV connection Hasselt-Maastricht is introduced.

This agreement will also be maintained when switching to the smart card.

Interoperability between Dutch and Belgian smart cards is not yet in place and will take some time. However, it is essential that Dutch people can effortlessly purchase a smartcard from De Lijn. De Lijn will investigate this further in the coming years. This will guarantee smooth and user-friendly access to Flemish public transport lines in the Netherlands, and enhance mobility in the Euroregion.

With this project, De Lijn also hopes to gain new information and insights about the Euroregion, which will contribute to smooth future cooperation. This is something De Lijn attaches great importance to.
