Business manager Rudi Vertommen at Plus Home Services is happy to take you through their story
Plus Home Services is a service voucher company with a clear vision. “We work in a decentralised way in order to be closer to our customers and our more than 4,000 home helpers,” explains business manager Rudi Vertommen. “We also apply this local strategy to the travel movements of our personnel.”
Plus Home Services offers home help to private customers. “Support staff at 53 offices spread across the country represent a permanent and easily accessible point of contact. In addition, we always look for assignments close to our home helpers, and we also try to keep the distance between assignments short. It’s a matter of matching home helpers with the right customers and putting together well-thought-out timetables.”
Short and efficient journeys
Keeping journeys short is one thing. “We also want travel to take place as efficiently as possible,” adds Rudi. “The shorter the journey time, the easier it is for our home helpers to pick up their children from school, for example. Long and difficult journeys benefit no one and serve no purpose. Not the home helpers nor the productivity of our company.”
Thinking together about mobility
At the time of hiring, we therefore actively consider how the employee will travel. Rudi: “In the end it’s always the home help that decides. Plus Home Services operates throughout Belgium. We can hardly impose the same mode of transport on everyone: the transport situations in the different regions are too varied for that. We discuss all options carefully and always check if they’re interested in having a De Lijn bus and tram travel pass”, explains Rudi. “We’ve been working with De Lijn right from the start, because we’re convinced of the benefits.”
Environmental friendliness, convenience and safety
Which benefits of using buses and trams are the most important for Plus Home Services? Rudi: “Environmental friendliness plays an important role for us, but so does ease of use. In rural areas, home helpers can park their car on the customer’s drive, but in city centres finding a parking space can be much more difficult.” Plus Home Services is also actively concerned about the safety of its employees, inside and outside the work place. “Our figures show that the fewest accidents while travelling to work occur with public transport. This is an extra reason to encourage it,” insists Rudi.
100% prepaid travel passes
In terms of financing, Plus Home Services pays 100% of the cost of travel passes, through the third-party payer scheme. Rudi: “We feel that with a full advance payment of this sort we can encourage people to choose a travel pass over a kilometre allowance for their car. It’s also positive for the home helpers, who aren’t necessarily particularly well-off, as they don’t have to pay the cost of their annual travel pass upfront themselves.”
Win-win
“Of course Plus Home Services is operating in a sector that is subsidised by the government,” adds Rudi, “so we don’t have bags of money to hand out. But if we can set things up in a way that creates a win-win for employer and employee, we will always do so. The De Lijn travel pass is a good example of this.”
