De Lijn is introducing contactless payment (cEMV) on all buses and trams. This means of payment has been developed by Europay, Mastercard and Visa, and is easy, safe and fast!

From 25 May, you can pay contactlessly on all our trams: on the coast, in Ghent and in Antwerp. From June 28, this is also possible on the Ring trambus. Contactless payment on buses will start in a later phase, as the terminals are currently not accessible due to the COVID-19 measures.

How do I pay contactlessly?

Hold a contactless bank card or other medium, such as a smartphone or smart watch, in front of the white terminal. A single trip costs 2.50 euros. * You can transfer to another bus or tram free within 60 minutes after first use (note: transfers are only possible to another tram in the first roll-out), in which case you should hold the same payment medium in front of the terminal again.

If you’re still on a bus or tram after the hour has elapsed, you can complete your ride. We won’t charge you for a new one. And don’t worry: there are no additional costs associated with contactless payment.

* With the exception of dial-a-buses and the Limburg express lines.

Do you want to pay contactlessly for a fellow-passenger? You will need to do so using a different medium. For example, you can pay with your smartphone for your child and use your contactless credit card for yourself. Consult our FAQs for more information.

Before you board the vehicle, make sure that:

  • You’ve already used your contactless bank card or smartphone successfully at a retailer or shop. Contact your bank to learn more about exactly how it works.
  • You have at least 7,50 euros in your bank account if you are using a contactless debit card.

All you need is a card!

Hold a contactless bank card or other medium, such as a smartphone or smart watch, in front of the white terminal.

Hold it less than 4 centimetres away in front of the contactless payment symbol.

A green tick will appear on the screen and you will hear a sound signal confirming your payment.

You can transfer to another bus or tram within 60 minutes, in which case you should hold the same payment medium in front of the terminal again.

Online portal

You can see an overview of your contactless payments and journeys made on our secure online online portal. You can also go there to settle any outstanding balance.

You don’t need to create an account. You can log in with the card number of your bank card or with the payment reference on your account statement.

How is my payment processed?

The amount you have to pay depends on the number of journeys you made that day. We calculate this at night and the amount is automatically settled with your bank. If you transfer to another vehicle within 60 minutes, you won’t be charged for this. We always add a payment reference to your bank statement. You can check this on the online portal.

Did you pay with a contactless...

  • Debit card? If so, it can take up to three working days for the charge for your trip or trips to be deducted from your account. The exact timing differs from bank to bank.
  • Credit card? If so, we’ll show your trip on your monthly statement. The charge for your trip will be paid along with your other payments.
  • Prepaid card? If so, the charge will be deducted from your credit after one or more days. The exact timing differs from bank to bank.
