Antwerp metro tunnel renovation: new schedule
The large-scale renovation of the Antwerp metro tunnel is progressing well, but will take longer than planned. During the demolition phase, additional asbestos was found in hard-to-reach places, such as behind walls and under concrete elements. To guarantee the safety of workers and the surrounding area, this asbestos was removed according to the strict safety and remediation procedure.

Additional asbestos removal extends the works
These extra works required more time, so the schedule has been adjusted. Together with the contractor, all options were reviewed to keep the delay as small as possible. Meanwhile, the asbestos has been safely removed and rebuilding of the tunnel infrastructure has started. According to the new schedule, the tram connection between Linkeroever and Rechteroever will resume by the 2027 construction shutdown.
