Antwerp: interruption of services on tram line 11 from 13 March 2023

From 13 March, services on tram line 11 (Centraal Station – Berchem Station) will be interrupted. This is due to the redevelopment of Lange and Korte Nieuwstraat, Kipdorp and Sint-Jacobsmarkt, among other streets. You will be able to use plenty of alternative services.

27 March 2025 - Tips, information and news

At the end of last year, the route was already shortened to end at Centraal Station due to the works on the Stadslus (city loop) between Rooseveltplaats and Melkmarkt.

Various alternatives

Tram 11 connects Berchem Station with Centraal Station via the east side of the railway embankment between the two stations. It serves Zurenborg (on the boundary between the districts of Antwerp and Berchem) and the area around Provinciestraat and Ommeganckstraat (on the boundary between the districts of Antwerp and Borgerhout).

You can take bus lines 21 and 30 to and from several stops in the same areas.

The lines on the other side of the railway embankment* offer the smoothest connection: tram line 9, whose route runs roughly parallel to that of tram 11, as do bus lines 20 and 32.

Various alternatives

Tram 9 (Silsburg – P+R Linkeroever)

  • Part of this tram’s route runs from Berchem Station to Centraal Station via the streets right next to the railway embankment (west side).

  • There are stops on Cuperusstraat and Mercatorstraat, after which the tram goes underground to pre-metro station Plantin, where it also stops at Centraal Station (pre-metro station Diamant) and Rooseveltplaats (pre-metro station Opera).

  • Further on, it also stops at the pre-metro stations Meir and Groenplaats, which are close to Melkmarkt (the old final stop of tram 11).

  • Tram 9 has a designated lane almost everywhere, and is therefore a lot faster than tram 11.

Bus line 20 (Borsbeek – Rooseveltplaats) and bus 32 (Edegem – Rooseveltplaats)

  • These take roughly the same route as tram 9 between Berchem Station and Centraal Station, although of course they run above ground.

  • Final stop Rooseveltplaats: Tram 11 normally stops here too.

Bus line 21 (Wilrijk Neerland – Rooseveltplaats)

  • This also runs between Berchem Station and Centraal Station, but then continues via Binnensingel and Plantin en Moretuslei, where several stops are located near the Zurenborg district and Provinciestraat.

  • From the Mercatorstraat stop it takes the same route as lines 20 and 32 to Rooseveltplaats.

Bus 30 (Zuidstation – Stuivenberg)

This runs (like tram 11) via Cogels-Osylei from Berchem Station to the Draakplaats stop. After this there are several stops in Borgerhout which are still within walking distance of Provinciestraat.

If you want to go to Centraal Station or Rooseveltplaats, transfer to one of these trams on Turnhoutsebaan:

  • tram 8 P+R Wommelgem - Astrid

  • tram 10 P+R Schoonselhof - Wijnegem

  • tram 24 Silsburg - Havenhuis

* In Zurenborg there is a crossing for pedestrians coming from Steenbokstraat, Arendstraat and Grote Hondstraat. You then arrive at the Zurenborg stop. Further on you can also walk or cycle to the other side of the railway via Plantin en Moretuslei and Lange Kievitstraat.

Your safety comes first

When there are diversions, we always determine the correct locations of the temporary stops (including final stops) in consultation with the local government.

Our regulations also state that drivers can only let you on and off at these stops that have been formally determined (with the local government).

  • This is to ensure both your own safety and that of other road users.

  • Also, from an insurance point of view, you would not be covered in the event of any accidents getting on or off the bus outside these formal stops.

We thank you in advance for your understanding of this temporary situation and for your courtesy to our drivers.
